He has good some points, and his system is well thought out, but as a drummer of 10 years I found the following missing:
- an introduction to who he his or what his music sounds like when played with band
- any lesson or part thereof above 90 bpm
- any treatment of swing, or a good treatment of dynamics
He’s not really much worse than much of the drum-instruction establishment which acts as if notes on paper add up to good set playing.
Better drum instructional videos for what I think drummers should sound/teach like: Carter Beauford, Under the Table and Drumming, Akira Jimbo Metamorphoses, Zoro Commandments of R&B. I have a feeling Weckl would be pretty good too, but I got taken in by the reviews on this one..

I just got the dvd and it has to be the worst. The film quality is low, and the guy has a fever for more cowbell. Beware before you buy, definitely not for rock nor metal.

Coordination & Groove with Alan Schechner is the greatest drum dvd I’ve ever seen, and far from ordinary. I play only guitar and found this video to be intriguing, not only for technical quality, but for straight up incredible drumming. Alan is a true artist and demonstrates in a manner that penetrates the viewer, absolutely relative, and beneficial to all people of music! He covers everything possible and in a very melodic, relaxed way which I think was key to keeping me interested. This dvd answers questions that drummers, or other band members may have about styles, technique, timing, gear etc. It does so in a step by step process devoting just the right length of time for each segment, never boring the viewer. Before and after clips of the most popular styles are clearly performed. Alan even includes the online notation presented in his video @ Iconsofrock.com, I think this is really great for people serious about improving their drumming . Then my favorite parts are the solos which incorporate all elements of Alans’ wizardry on the set. But you better watch them more than once. As you do you’ll see more, and begin to hear a pattern of rhythmic, energy filled drumming that is fluid and undeniably balanced. There are even some cool bonus features from the master cowbeller and stickster Alan Schechner. I’m sure that all who watch, and listen to Coordination & Groove will get something good out of it right away , especially other drummers!

Whether you’re a beginner, an intermediate, or a professional, Coordination & Groove is sure to improve your drumming! This DVD shows you how to develop basic beats into myriad rhythms and melodies spanning all kinds of music. The multiple camera angles enable you to see important techniques that Alan uses for both the hands and the feet. Applying these techniques dramatically improved my dexterity as a drummer. The beats are written out and a password is provided to download the notation for future reference, or you can simply play along with the DVD. Most importantly, Alan exhibits a skill and an enthusiasm for the drums that will inspire you to reach a higher level of musicianship. His mastery of the instrument is unquestionable.
